Listen: Killer Mike and The Alchemist’s new song “The Boonies”

on April 10, 2014, 4:23pm

While he’s been most closely associated with El-P over the last few years, Killer Mike joins forces with another producing legend in The Alchemist for a new track titled “The Boonies”. Not only is the track the pair’s first such collaboration, it also serves as the lead single to a new Adult Swim mixtape set to coincide with the April 21st return of The Boondocks. (The show has been on hiatus since the fall of 2010 following a phenomenal three-year run.)

Though Asheru’s theme song is catchy, “The Boonies” seems like a much better fit for the socially-conscious cartoon. While Alchemist’s beat of old, clangy pianos and dusty drums setting a bleak and slightly terrifying mood, Killer Mike draws deeply from the show, offering his own dark take on race and politics in modern America. With rhymes about police brutality, his own family struggles, and the suburbs as the graveyard for cultural revolution, Mike takes main character Huey Freeman’s emotional pain and white-hot outrage to their eventual and unnerving extreme.

Due out April 6th, The Boondocks Mixtape also features contributions from Lil Herb, Smoke DZA, Chevy Woods, Problem, Roscoe Dash, and Skeme, among others. If you’ve forgotten about how awesome Boondocks the series can be, catch the season four trailer below.
