Despite having known each other for just over a year, New York’s Denitia And Sene have the kind of chemstry that invokes a poppier Peaches and Cream, a more seductive Sonny and Cher, and a less wholesome Captain and Tennille. The duo mets while working at a Brooklyn artist’s loft, with Sene, a rapper and producer, tapping the singer-songwriter Denitia to sing a few choruses. Their initial connection, based on a shared interest in R&B and experimental pop, was so profound, they immediately set to work on last year’s blah blah EP.
For their latest project, the duo expands temporarily into a four-piece, as Denitia and Sene are joined by twin brother producers Christian Rich (Pharrell Williams, Pusha T) on “Divided”. While Sene’s used to manning the boards solo, Christian Rich are no slouches, continuing with the duo’s same formula (hip-hip vigor mixed with R&B coyness), but adding their own spin with some hazy ambiance. That leaves the Denitia and Sene time to focus on harmonizing, with Denitia’s husky, soulful croon given an edgier tinge thanks to Sene’s more abstract croon, and vice versa. Even with the added star power, the pair’s sense of intimacy and connectivity always remains the focus.

“Divided” is available now via iTunes. It’s also one of four tracks included on the Red Bull Sound Select’s split 7-inch, due out Record Store Day (April 19th). The other three acts included are Tapioca and the Flea, Bagheera, and Thurz, all of whom worked with an “established music luminary” as part of the RBSS mentor program. The 7-inch will be free with purchase at all official Record Store Day retailers (find that list here).
