Vampire Weekend’s own Rostam Batmanglij will provide the score to the upcoming revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth, a play about adolescence and the Reagan-era starring Michael Cera, Keiran Culkin, and Tavi Gevinson.
Since premiering in 1996, the production has welcomed a number of A-list actors to its cast, including Matt Damon, Anna Paquin, and Jake Gyllenhaal. The Scott Rudin-produced revival marks the Broadway debut for Cera, Culkin, and Gevinson.
This is Our Youth follows three rebellious college students as they struggle to grow up and find their place in society. Having been children during the more liberal ’60s, they find their core values now at odds with those of the ’80s Reagan era. Cera plays Warren, a discontent 17-year-old who has just stolen $15,000 from his family’s life savings, while Culkin plays Dennis, his drug dealer. Gevinson, founder of Rookie Magazine, plays Jessica, an ambitious fashion designer.
Though Batmangli has had a hand in producing all of Vampire Weekend’s albums, as well as worked with artists like The Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser, Best Coast, and Kid Cudi, this would be his first foray into the world of theater.
The play is set to open on June 18th in Chicago and September 11th in New York.
