Here’s how I know that Solange is a true pop star: for one, she has no problem giving others the spotlight, even during a hugely important performance such as Coachella. Not only did she let Beyoncé momentarily eclipse her set, but she also busted out not one, but two cover songs in Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness Is the Move” and Kate Bush’s 1985 single “Cloudbusting”.
The Kate Bush cover, specifically, demonstrates the remaining reasons why Solange is a pop dynamo. Tackling a decidedly intricate song, written and performed by one of the most influential female voices of the last 40 years, Solange delivers a rollicking version that leans toward the realm of spellbinding House music, her voice equal parts sweet and soulful and mysterious and beguiling. See, kids, that’s how you play nice and come out looking like a million bucks.
