Watch: The National’s Matt Berninger writes song about chili and Yetis, inspired by Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”

on April 10, 2014, 9:07am

As the chief songwriter of The National, Matt Berninger has continuously proven that he’s got a certain way with words, offering deep and stirring insight into the human condition. In addition, a notable guest role on The Mindy Project and various podcast appearances have demonstrated that he’s got a funny bone to go along with that profound emotionality. During an appearance on The Pete Holmes Show, Berninger finally got a chance to showcase both sides of himself with a little impromptu songwriting session.

After a brief interview (in which Holmes finally learns to pronounce “Berninger”), the pair set to work on writing a “hit pop song” that uses Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” as a springboard. We’re not sure if it’s got what it takes to be a summer smash, but “Yeti, Get Ready” is a peppy acoustic jam that’s already wormed its way into this writer’s head. What more could a song need than references to Cincinnati, a chorus that’s “erotic while still relatable to the tween market”, and such solid gold lyricism as “Throw some chili on my ‘ghetti/Had a three-way with a yeti.” Quick, someone get these two over to Jack White’s Voice-o-Graph so they can cut this banger pronto.
