10 years ago, Zach Braff made his filmmaking debut with Garden State, an enormously successful indie with equally killer soundtrack, highlighted by The Shins, Coldplay, Iron & Wine, Thievery Corporation, and more. Now, after a successful Kickstarter campaign, Braff is back with his second feature film Wish I Was Here, which is set for a July 25th theatrical release.

Starring Braff as a “struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life” (sound familiar?), who homeschools his kids after his father is diagnosed with inoperable cancer. Directed by Braff, who co-wrote the film with his brother Adam, Wish I Was Here will also feature costars Joey King, Kate Hudson, Jim Parsons, Mandy Patinkin, Josh Gad and Ashley Green.

While Wish I Was Here isn’t technically a sequel to Garden State, it’s definitely at least its spiritual successor. With the movie’s newly-released trailer, the similarities between the two films become even more clear. Most importantly, The Shins, who “will change your life, I swear”, make an appearance with their 2012 Port Of Morrow single “Simple Song” soundtracking the trailer. Watch it below.

Wish I Was Here premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Braff has also curated a soundtrack to accompany the film, which is reported to include a collaboration between Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, in addition to new, original songs from Bon Iver and of course, The Shins.
