Tonight’s inaugural broadcast of the iHeartRadio Music Awards featured performances from Kendrick Lamar, Arcade Fire, and Pharrell, among others. However, a celebration of popular music wouldn’t be complete without its resident king: the telecast also included the debut of Michael Jackson’s new song “Love Never Felt So Good”, from the forthcoming posthumous album XSCAPE.
“Love Never Felt So Good” was written, originally recorded, and produced by Jackson and Paul Anka in 1983, around the time they recorded “This Is It”. Produced by John McClain, co-executor of the Estate of Michael Jackson, “the contemporized recording is a magic combination of the new and the original production that retains the track’s analog, early 80s feel, while also sounding right at home with the disco-soul inflected music of today,” according to a press release.
The single, along with an alternate version featuring Justin Timberlake, will be available digitally beginning Friday, May 2nd. Stream both versions below, plus watch footage of its debut at the iHeartRadio Awards.
Fun fact: as Pharrell revealed earlier this week, much of the material on Timberlake’s debut album Justified originally began as songs for an undisclosed Jackson project.
XSCAPE is due out May 27th via Epic Records. For more sounds, check out the title track.
