Listen: Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis covers Emily Haines’ “The Last Page”

on May 21, 2014, 2:05pm

No stranger to covers, left field and not, Speedy Ortiz frontwoman Sadie Dupuis has tackled R&B (Ciara’s “Ride”), alternative rock (Blur’s “Bugman”), and yes, even cartoons (Josie and the Pussycats’ “Just Pretend To Be Nice”). She continues this week with her own take on Emily Haines’ gloomy, piano-led number “The Last Page”, off one of my favorite 2006 albums, Knives Don’t Have Your Back.

Dupuis, accompanied here by Sam Rosenberg of Two Inch Astronaut, strips the original to its bare essentials. What’s left is a rendition that somehow sounds sadder and more distraught, its sparse, lo-fi spirit a surprisingly effective conveyor of such profound despair. I’m not sure what Haines is up to these days — Metric’s last album was in 2012 — but I wouldn’t mind seeing these two ladies collaborate on something.
