Listen: Strand Of Oaks’ new song “JM”, a tribute to Jason Molina

on May 28, 2014, 3:00pm

Last year, the music community lost Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. leader Jason Molina, who died from liver failure at age of 39. Out of the many his music influenced and touched, one fan, Timothy Showalter, a.k.a. Strand Of Oaks, has honored the songwriter’s legacy with a new song, entitled “JM”.

Along with “Goshen ’97” and “Shut In” which also appear on his forthcoming album HEAL, “JM” finds Showalter continuing his streak of emotional gut punches. On the track, Showalter sings, “I had your sweet tunes to play” over an extended jam of soaring electric guitars and brooding atmospherics. Sonically, the song feels like a spiritual successor to the darker offerings on Magnolia Electric Co. like “Almost Was Good Enough” and the epic bonus track “The Big Game Is Every Night”. With Molina’s absence still sorely felt, “JM” is a moving tribute to an artist who made equally moving songs. Listen over at NPR.
