Michael Jackson’s hologram was nearly as good as the real thing

on May 18, 2014, 9:36pm

At Sunday night’s Billboard Music Awards, Michael Jackson delivered his first performance behind his new album, XSCAPEWell, sort of; the BMAs and the Jackson estate joined forces to create an MJ hologram for a “world premiere experience”. The stunning 3D digital projection of the King of Pop kicked and moonwalked its way through the XSCAPE cut “Slave to the Rhythm”. Holograms have become one of the most unavoidable clichés in music as of late, but tonight’s resurrection actually did MJ proud. If you missed the broadcast on ABC, or if you just want to feel like Michael’s with us once more, catch the replay below.

XSCAPE is out now on Epic Records. Hologram USA Inc. and Musion Das Hologram Ltd, the companies who own the patents to the technology used to create the Tupac hologram from Coachella 2012, are currently involved in a lawsuit against the the BMAs and the Jackson estate. While the case failed to prevent the Michael hologram from having its debut, the companies are still seeking restitution for what they see as patent violations.
