Secret Solstice: A Green Festival Powered by Volcanoes

on May 19, 2014, 2:20pm

Secret Solstice is just one month away (June 20-22), but it’s already establishing new standards for how festivals organize and conduct themselves. The event is billed as one of the greenest festivals on Earth, and for good reason. All festivities take place during the Summer Solstice, meaning 72 hours of sunlight will reduce the need for nighttime lighting and heating. But even more impressive is the fact that underground volcanoes will provide the vast majority of kilowatts needed to power Secret Solstice. Yes, you heard that right, electricity from volcanoes! Just think, guitars, amps, keyboards, and turntables all running on volcanic energy. We swear we’re not making this up.

It turns out that Iceland’s abundance of geothermal power — driven by superheated steam trapped in underground volcanic vents — will generate enough energy to mitigate a reliance on non-renewable energy sources, such as fossil fuels and peat.  Harnessing this geothermal power also means a drastic reduction in carbon emissions and pollution. Another perk — aside from the fact that attendees can dance guilt free — is the refreshingly warm geothermal pool located on site. This will allow festival goers to enjoy the show while soaking in steam heated water. Not too shabby.

CoS publishing partner Time Magazine has already dubbed Secret Solstice one of the best music festivals to check out in 2014 but it looks like we can add green festival to its list of superlatives. Mother Earth thanks you in advance.
