“I feel weird writing this because the people in Arcade Fire are my friends,” Lorde says of her list, which she put together for Rolling Stone (via ArcadeFireTube). “It’ll be fine, I think. They’ve been my favorite band since a guy who was kind of mean and kind of my friend put The Suburbs on my computer one day after school. It was a superhot day; my hair was wet from the pool. I was 13. I still remember that day.”
Appropriately, four songs from The Suburbs made her top 10, specifically “We Used to Wait”, “Read to Start”, “The Suburbs”, and “Rococo”. Also making the list were three songs from the band’s latest album, Reflektor in “Flashbulb Eyes”, “Normal Person”, and “Afterlife”. However, it was songs from the band’s 2004 debut, Funeral, that dominated the top 3 positions. “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)”, “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)”, and “Rebellion (Lies)” went one, two, three. Receiving no love? Songs from 2007’s Neon Bible.
Below, check out a Spotify playlist of Lorde’s favorites as well as her justification for each selection.
