Watch a preview of the Tupac musical Holler If Ya Hear Me

on May 11, 2014, 12:20pm

Holler If Ya Hear Me, the Broadway musical inspired by Tupac Shakur, is finally ready to hit next month. In anticipation of its June 2nd debut at Palace Theatre,  Entertainment Weekly has shared a teaser video featuring the full cast singing a trio of the rapper’s most iconic hits.

The clip opens with “California Love”, which actually sounds exactly like you’d imagine a Broadway reinterpretation of the classic track to sound: big instrumentation, almost too-smooth group choruses, but very true to the original. “Unconditional Love”, meanwhile, has been turned into a female-led ballad, and the volume is kicked up a notch on the title track. Watch below.

Repurposing Tupac’s lyrics to fit a completely original narrative about friendship, family, revenge, change, and hope,” Holler If You Hear Me was written by Todd Kreidler (Gem of the Ocean, Radio Golf), choreographed by Wayne Cilento (A Chorus Line), and directed by Tony Awards nominee Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the SunDriving Miss Daisy). With rapper/poet Saul Williams in the starring role, the musical officially opens June 19th. Ticketing information is available at the Palace website.
