Whereas I’d like to think the world will one day be overrun by zombies, Conor Oberst has a much different image of the future in mind. In the video for “Zigzagging Toward the Light”, Oberst and director David Altobelli transport viewers 10 years into the future, to a world still reeling from some large-scale, unspecified disaster (it may have been electrical in nature) followed by the sudden ascension of some Big Brother-esque A.I. program. No, we don’t get to see anyone fight Terminators; instead, a long-haired Oberst muses on the quaint world before, leading up to a time travel sequence back to just last month for a roving performance through Manhattan.
With its mix of doom and gloom and a whole boatload of anxious energy, the entire affair plays off like the rock and roll equivalent of Woody Allen’s Sleeper. On the plus side, at least no one dresses like this in the future.
