Houston declares June 10th as “Drake Day”

on June 12, 2014, 11:41pm

As previously reported, rapper Drake is showing his admiration for his adopted hometown of Houston, Texas with the Houston Appreciation Weekend, which officially kicked off during tonight’s Houston Astros game. Now, the city of Houston itself is reciprocating all that loving by officially declaring June 10th as “Drake Day”.

The city’s mayor, Annise D. Parker, announced the decision in a ceremony earlier today. According to an official proclamation that Drake’s since posted on Instagram, the holiday is one that “commends and appreciates Drake for dedicating his time to Houston through his passion and enthusiasm for music and our city.”

The proclamation continues, “In 2008, Lil Wayne invited Drake to fly to Houston and tour with him, and as a result, Drake has been a City Of Houston Ambassador, paying homage to Houston through his lyrics. He frequently mentions Houston in his songs, such as when he coined the term ‘Houstatlantavegas’, and has also been known to show kindness to the citizens of Houston.”

In case you’re already gearing up for next year’s festivities, the official gift is lint rollers, the required meal is tuna on a bagel, and everyone must watch old University of Kentucky games.

Check out the proclamation below.

Houston Appreciation Weekend runs through Sunday, June 15th. Other activities include a concert on Friday night, a pool party, a screening of Think Like A Man Too, and more. Following HAW, Drizzy will return to Texas this fall as part of his co-headlining tour with Lil Wayne.
