Neo-R&B crooner Tom Krell, a.k.a. How To Dress Well, returns today with the third track from his upcoming album, “What Is This Heart?”, due out June 24th via Weird World. Following “Words I Don’t Remember” and “Repeat Pleasure”, “Face Again” takes an an abrupt turn toward the moody and aggressive. Here, Krell places his falsetto croon smack dab into a cacophony of foreboding reverb, sinister synths, hollowed-out drums, and eerie vocal samples. It’s a much different side of HTDW’s normally sensuous R&B-pop hybrid, but the heart’s definitely there amidst all the discord.
Watch the song’s accompanying music video below, which Krell describes as part two of the “What Is This Heart?” Trilogy. Part one came with the video for “Repeat Pleasure”, which followed a hospice nurse as she fell in love with her patient’s grandson. In the sequel, a young couple struggles in the wake of a sudden loss. Krell himself appears as some kind of mystic/spiritual guide.
For more sounds, check out Krell’s new mixtape, NO WORDS TO SAY: Songs for “What Is This Heart?”. In addition to snippets of other album tracks, it features a cover of Taking Back Sunday’s “You Know How I Do” (!) and an “unofficial HTDW duet edit” of Angel Olsen’s “Windows”.
