My college days were filled with spending too much time at the campus radio station, too little time studying, and somewhere along the way deciding what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. Yeah, I was pretty square. New York pop-duo Jack and Eliza, students at New York University and Columbia University respectively, have been far more productive. During their freshman year (i.e., last fall, folks), the duo signed to Yebo Music. Later this summer, while their fellow students are hitting up the beach and sleeping in, they’ll will release their debut EP, No Wonders.
For the five-song effort, Jack and Eliza worked with producer Chris Zane (The Walkmen, Mumford & Sons), whose influence is apparent on lead single “Hold The Line”. Here, an exuberance of youthful energy is captured with little more than bright, clean guitar tones and the occasional tambourine chime. With harmonies that shine, and might remind some of a Shins B-side, the pair poignantly capture sentiments far above their grade level with musings like “we’ll be playing in an old man’s war”. (Fun fact: Eliza won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest award back in 2011.)
