Typically when bands take part in the A.V. Club’s Undercover series, they’re usually tackling a song for the first (and possibly last) time. However, when Brooklyn’s The Men recently visited the not-so-round little room, Devo’s “Gates of Steel” was not at all unfamiliar choice, as the 1980 single has been part of the band’s songbook for some time.
Regardless, the studio setting and professionally-shot footage helped highlight why it’s such a great cover in the first place. With real vigor and enthusiasm, the band manages to maintain the original’s slightly geeky, New Wave sheen while still pushing it toward the realm of sweltering punk. Plus, I now get the chance to make this most awesome joke: “Are We Not Devo? We Are The Men!”.
