Here’s a fun fact: Sacramento may be California’s official state capital, but the city of Monterey is forever known as the “first capital”. The ocean-side city was home to the state’s first theater, public library, publicly-funded school, and printing press and newspaper. It was also the site of 1967’s Monterey Pop Festival, widely heralded as the nation’s first major music festival.
45 years later, Goldenvoice gave Monterey another multi-day music celebration with the First City Festival. Now in its second year, the festival will welcome a few dozen bands to the Monterey County Fair and Event Center August 23rd and 24th.
It may be a fairly young festival, but First City has already drawn some sizable names. Beck, The National, and Phantogram top this year’s bill, with Best Coast, Dawes, Cults, Future Islands, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Liars, How To Dress Well, and CocoRosie just some of the names filling out the undercard.
Last year, some 10,000 revelers made their way to Monterey, and this year you can be among the sizable crowd. We’ve got ourselves a pair of two-day general admission passes, and we’d just love to hand them over to you. All you’ve got to do is enter using the widget below, and cross your fingers.
