Earlier this month, Azealia Banks announced that she had severed all ties with Interscope Records. After signing with the label in 2011, Banks grew increasingly frustrated as Interscope repeatedly delayed the release of her debut album, Broke With Expensive Taste. Since the news of her departure surfaced, Banks has established her own imprint, Azealia Banks Records, reportedly retaining all the rights to the music released via Interscope.
Wasting little time, Banks returns today with her first single as a newly-minted independent artist, “Heavy Metal and Reflective”. The self-professed “ass-clapperrrrrr” is certainly a decent enough start for Banks to reclaim her career, as the combo of throbbing bass and sweat-soaked synths has the potential to a true club banger. While she isn’t rapping about anything that substantial, mostly references to “Billie Jean” and Tamagotchis, there’s an air of focus and confidence in Banks’ approach that sounds like that of an emcee who is hungry once more.
