All we really know about enigmatic U.K. beatmaker Sophie is that his first name is Sam, he’s from Scotland, and he’s responsible for two of last year’s most compelling left-field electronic singles, “Bipp” and “Elle”. “Lemonade”, his latest song, features the same all-over-the-place, sample-heavy mentality that made his early singles so memorable but with some added frantic energy.
From the start, “Lemonade” shows that it’s far from prototypical with its bizarre sample choices, including the sounds of underwater bubbles and a tea kettle whistling. Later, song veers off the rails when it abruptly changes tone from hypnotic and beat-heavy to saccharine, overblown pop. Overall, it’s a crazy but thrilling listen. Hear it below.
“Lemonade” will see a vinyl and digital release on August 4th, along with B-side “Hard” via Numbers.
Sophie will also be going on a brief tour in August. Dates are below.
