Listen: Statik Selektah’s new song “The Imperial”, featuring Action Bronson and Black Thought

on July 03, 2014, 10:00am

On August 19th, DJ/producer Statik Selektah will release his latest album, What Goes Around, via Show Off/Duck Down Music. Back in June, he teamed up with Joey Bada$$ and Freddie Gibbs for lead single “Carry On”. Today, he recruits Action Bronson, The Roots’ Black Thought, and Royce Da 5’9 for “The Imperial”.

As far as this writer is concerned, Statik has gathered perhaps one of the most befuddling rosters, as each emcee represents a vastly different aesthetic: Action’s truly off-the-wall, Black Thought is definitely the most insightful, and Royce is cut from a more mainstream cloth. Yet like any good producer, Statik simply lays down a beat, in this case one heavy on string samples and percussion, and lets each rapper do his thing. The result is an entertaining mix of shit-talking (Bronson hypes his prowess with the ladies and his 23-inch Panasonic TV) and dense wordplay (Black Thought references Amadeus, séances, and André 3000 in the span of 15 seconds).
