Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will release Hypnotic Eye, their 13th studio album and follow-up to 2010’s Mojo, on July 29th via Reprise Records. Today, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees preview the release with “Fault Lines”.
Like the album’s three previous singles, “American Plan B”, “U Get Me High”, and “Red River”, “Fault Lines” boasts muscular guitar chords, while also cranking up the “wah-wah” effects and adding an intense, circuitous bass line. Petty sings, “See those fault lines, they’re laid out like land mines, it’s hard to relax,” before admitting, “I’ve got a few of my own fault lines running under my life.” It’s perhaps the best preview of Hypnotic Eye yet, with a memorable guitar solo closing it out.
