Man dies at Pemberton Music Festival

on July 19, 2014, 9:30pm

According to the Toronto Sun, a 21-year-old man died Friday afternoon at the Pemberton Music Festival in Pemberton Valley, British Columbia. The man, identified as Nick Phongsavath of Regina, was found inside his tent near a row of portable toilets.

Initial police reports have offered no cause of death, though foul play has not been ruled out. In a tweet sent early Saturday morning, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team wrote, “IHIT team deployed to Pemberton for a suspicious death.” The IHIT is responsible for “investigating homicides, high-risk missing persons and suspicious deaths.”

“IHIT is working closely with the Sea-to-Sky detachment and have been interviewing witnesses and speaking with event attendees throughout the night,” said IHIT’s Sgt. Jennifer Pound. “At this point, there is nothing to confirm or definitively rule out foul play.”

On Friday evening, Paula Baker, an online producer for Canada’s Global News, tweeted that someone had been found “badly injured” near a washroom.

The festival continued on despite the tragedy, though several sections near where the body had been found, including camps on the northwest side, had been taped off for investigatory purposes. According to the CBC, the cordoning-off affected only 55 campers, and those individuals were expected to return to their tents sometime Saturday evening.

The Sun reports that there have been no arrests made at Pemberton since doors opened on Thursday. The festival is expected to draw some 20,000 attendees over the entire weekend.
