Stream: “Weird Al” Yankovic’s new album, Mandatory Fun

on July 16, 2014, 2:46pm

“Weird Al” Yankovic’s 14th studio album, Mandatory Fun, is out this week via RCA. It’s also available to stream in full below (via Spotify).

The follow-up to 2011’s Alpocalypse is said to be Yankovic’s final album before transitioning into a cycle of more “frequent releases,” such as singles and EPs. As he explained in a recent interview with NPR, parodying acts while also being timely has become increasingly more challenging in the era of YouTube.

“Anybody can upload their videos to YouTube and you don’t have to get the blessing of some record executive somewhere to get your stuff heard,” he explained. “If your stuff is good, chances are people will hear it. I don’t know that putting out 12 songs at once in this day and age is the best way for me to get my music out there, because if I’m waiting that long, chances are a lot of the material is going to be somewhat dated by the time it comes out.”

With Mandatory Fun, Yankovic is going out on something of a high note. That parody list includes Pharell Williams (turning “Happy” into the anti-lameness anthem “Tacky”), Robin Thicke (the awesome grammar lesson that is “Word Crimes”), and Lorde (in which “Royals” becomes an ode to “Foil”), plus additional spoofs of Cat Stevens, Pixies, Foo Fighters, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

“I’m happy to say I think I covered pretty much everyone I wanted to here,” he told Music Times. “I’m a fan of everyone I’ve covered on Mandatory Fun. I like to think my records are time capsules of different periods in music, and I think with the parodies done on this album it gives a general sense of what pop music was in this era.”
