Multi-instrumentalist Pablo Clements and James Griffith have been members of legendary trip-hop outfit UNKLE since 2007. While UNKLE co-founder James Lavelle has since put the project on an indefinite hiatus, Clements and Griffith have branched off to create their own experimental electronic group, TOYDRUM. The two started out remixing material by other artists (like Stereophonics and Tim Goldsworthy), but are now prepping the release of a series of mini-albums recorded at their own TOY ROOMS studio in Brighton, England. The first in the series, Distant Focus Vol. 1, is out September 29th via Underscore Collective.
The duo’s debut single, the Joel Well-aided “Void and Form”, sees them sticking to their UNKLE roots with a blend of intense rhythms and ethereal vocals. Griffith’s guitar tracks transition back and forth between atmospheric post-rock to chunky, dense, and overly aggressive riffs. Clements subtlety blends the entire affair together with humming synthesizers and glitching drum loops. It’s a haunting and gorgeous mix that has potential to fill the void for fans desperate for a new UNKLE record.
