Listen: Vince Staples’ menacing new single “Blue Suede”

on August 12, 2014, 12:35pm

Already this year, Long Beach, California rapper Vince Staples has released a mixtape called Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2 and paired up for promising collaborations with artists like Jhené Aiko and Common. Now, after signing a deal with Def Jam Records, the 21-year-old is releasing a new album, Hell Can Wait, which is due out sometime this fall. As the first preview of the LP, Staples has dropped “Blue Suede”, a brooding, fiery, and excellent lead single.

With production from Toronto beatmaker Hagler Tyrant, the song boasts a looping, police siren-like squeal of a high-pitched synth, some throbbing bass, and general sense of unease. Not just about wanting “them Jordan’s with the blue suede in ’em,” Staples raps, “Young graves get the bouquets/ Hope I outlive them red roses.” It’s a dark and distressing track, one that Staples absolutely shines on.
