Pablo Ruiz considers legal action against Tame Impala over plagiarism

on August 20, 2014, 11:30am

The Chilean music website that accused Tame Impala of plagiarizing Argentinian pop star Pablo Ruiz has admitted that it was all a joke. However, their stunt may still cause Tame Impala a legal headache.

On Monday, Rata.cl posted a YouTube video which suggested that Tame Impala lifted their 2012 hit single “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards” from Ruiz’s 1989 song “Océano”. However, the site’s publisher has since told Rolling Stone that the video was merely a joke that “went viral thanks to the magic of the Internet.”

Still, the similarities between the song are uncanny, prompting Ruiz to consider legal action against Tame Impala. In a recent interview with ESPN Radio Argentina, Ruiz said, “Obviously there is plagiarism. Not if you have done it on purpose or not, but there are seven bars that are equal to my song.” Ruiz added that he would consult with lawyers before deciding on his next move, according to Rolling Stone.

Reached for comment, Tame Impala songwriter Kevin Parker responded, “This is a joke, right?”
