Watch: Grimes’ video for “Go” is quintessential Grimes

on August 27, 2014, 1:08pm

Claire Boucher, aka Grimes, took her sweet time crafting the video for her new single, “Go”. “I’ve been stoned for a week strait cuz I need to be stoned to edit videos,” she explained on Twitter. “I’ve literally got a callous on my butt from sitting down editing 20 hrs. a day for a week strait. Haha, I hope it’s not permanent.” All that hard work seems to have paid off, as the end product is quite the spectacle. It’s also quintessential Grimes.

No doubt inspired by her obsessive fandom of Games of Thrones, indie rock’s very own Khaleesi embarks on an epic journey through a remote desert. Sadly, there are no dragons to be found, but a blonde-haired, sword-wielding warrior is by her side (aka Blood Diamonds, the track’s producer). However, without warning, the clip switches back to reality and takes us to a nightclub with jarring strobe lights, lots of intense close-ups, and people in freaky masks. Perhaps Grimes’ journey is nothing more than a hallucination? Decide for yourself by watching the rattling, visually-stimulating clip below.

Update: In an issued statement, Grimes said the video was inspired by Dante’s Inferno. I’d still argue her Game of Throne viewing habits played some role in the video’s creation.

It’s our take on Dante’s inferno. The circles of hell reflect more contemporary issues though.  We shot a bunch at the salton sea which is basically an apocalyptic wasteland filled with dead fish because of human carelessness, the bullet hole hallway a la korn freak on a leash etc etc.   If you look closely you can find clues.  Haha, but in the usual fashion it is also abstract enough to just be a trippy visual accompaniment to the song.

“Go” serves as the lead single off Grimes’ highly-anticipated fourth LP, the follow-up to 2012’s Visions.
