While you enjoy a marathon of House in your PJs, plenty of others are busy setting world records. First, Eminem snagged the honor for most words in a single song. Now, Bestival, the four-day boutique music festival currently taking place on the UK’s Isle of Wight, has officially secured the Guinness World Record for Biggest Disco Ball. All they need now is a giant pair of bell-bottoms and an industrial-sized can of hairspray and the Jolly Green Giant can finally live out his Saturday Night Fever dreams.
Confirmation of the record-breaking achievement came earlier this afternoon as organizers tweeted, “It’s official!!! We now hold the Guinness World Record for the biggest Disco Ball in the world!!!” Bestival’s disco ball is said to be over 10 meters (nearly 33 feet) in diameter. The previous record holder measured 9.98 meters (32 feet, nine inches) in diameter and was fabricated for a Bacardi-sponsored party in April 2012.
Rob Da Bank and his fellow organizers were challenged to craft the bulky ball by none other than Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers. Back in May, Rodgers laid down the challenge as a way to further bolster Chic’s own headlining set. “We’re going to do an extended set and I actually just made a challenge to the head of Bestival – I said that I would like to create the world’s largest disco party of all time.”
Rodgers added, “So he (Bank) says ‘how do we do that?’ So then I was like ‘I want you to create the world’s largest disco ball. He says ‘do you know how big that is?’ I say ‘I don’t know – I’m just making it up’. He said it would have to be 10 metres in diameter, so I said ’great – the challenge is on.”
The four-day Bestival wraps up Sunday evening with Chic’s “Desert Island Disco Finale.” Other acts that have performed this weekend include Beck, Outkast, Foals, James Blake, Disclosure, Sam Smith, MØ, Wild Beasts, and many more.
