Primus release new song “Golden Ticket” — listen

on September 15, 2014, 2:55pm

When they aren’t apeing Tool, alt rock under-lords Primus have another set of covers in the works. As you might have gathered from its title, Claypool and Co.’s upcoming Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble is a re-make of the 1971 classical Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Primus already shared a sugary taste with their warped version of “Pure Imagination”; now, the next layer of this musical Gobstopper comes with their take on the whimsical “Golden Ticket”.

What was formerly a song as bright and cheery as its namesake element has been transmogrified into something truly bizarre. Mixing together prog-esque grooves of undulating bass, bizarre, screechy guitars, and vocals from a barbershop quartet if lead by Guillermo Del Toro, Primus have made a beloved classic into something that’s equally funky and frightening. More like a “I’ve got a golden ticket … to Nightmareland!”

Listen in below.

Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble, marking the first album in 20 years to feature the band’s classic lineup of Les Claypool, Larry LaLonde, and Tim “Herb” Alexander, is due out October 21st via ATO Records. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Primus is currently on the road with Tool drummer Danny Carey (ergo the recent cover), with the last date set for Riot Fest Denver later this month. In October, the band will be joined by longtime stick swinger Tim “Herb” Alexander when they embark on the proper “Primus and the Chocolate Factory” tour. Update: Check out the updated itinerary below.
