Radiohead’s Phil Selway shares new song “It Will End In Tears” — listen

on September 08, 2014, 10:47am

As Radiohead prepare to enter the studio later this month, drummer Phil Selway is just a few weeks away from the release of his sophomore solo album, Weatherhouse. Even on his own, Selway still made the follow-up to 2010’s Familial something of a group project, working with friends and musicians Adem Ilhan and Quinta in Radiohead’s Oxfordshire studio.

“From the outset we wanted the album to be the three of us, and we covered a lot of instruments between us,” Selway said in a statement. “With a studio full of inspiring gear and a great-sounding desk, we felt like a band. Different musicians stretch you, and I felt stretched on Weatherhouse, but very enjoyably so.”

So far, that “stretching” has resulted in “Coming up for Air”, a display of Radiohead-esque atmospherics. Now, Selway explores new sonic possibilities with “It Will End In Tears”. Despite the sorrowful title, the track is actually rather uplifting, a quaint and romantic orchestral ballad marked by gentle piano, the sudden burst of a sweeping harmonies, and Selway’s own playful croon. For a guy known more for pushing musical boundaries, he’s positively mesmerizing when it comes to more straightforward pop structures and ideas.
