The Afghan Whigs to reissue Gentlemen with unreleased material

on September 08, 2014, 11:35am

If The Afghan Whigs’ classic 1993 album Gentlemen was a person, it’d finally be old enough to drink this year. In lieu of tequila shots, the band will commemorate the record’s 21st birthday with a deluxe reissue.

The aptly-titled Gentlemen At 21 features a completely remastered copy of the 11-track album alongside 17 demos, B-sides, and live performances, much of which has never before been released. According to a press release, this curated assortment “shows the stark foundation of the songs, giving a deep insight into the creation of the album while at the same time revealing some remarkable moments caught on tape.” Highlights include the original B-sides to 1992’s “Debonair” single, including “Mr. Superlove”, all three tracks from the What Jail Is Like EP, and a cover of the soul classic “Dark End of the Street”.

The press release adds, “Gentlemen At 21 presents the original record’s 11 tracks, updated but still retaining the 1993 album’s blistering swagger. The same 11 tracks that have made a visceral connection with fans over the last 21 years – the deeply dark and confessional lyrical content, the no-frills production qualities, and Greg Dulli’s soul-baring vocal performances captured on tape.”

Gentlemen At 21 is due out October 28th via Rhino Records. The two-disc set will be available digitally and on vinyl. A triple LP deluxe version will be released as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday event (November 28th). Consult the full tracklist below.
