More than just a title, Childish Gambino’s latest album, Because the Internet, was deeply indebted to and a profound exploration of the World Wide Web. From viral videos of “3005” to the “Because The Internet” screenplay and companion website, the rapper-actor-male stripper made effective use of the inherent open-endedness and creative freedom associated with the Internet. As it turns out, though, Gambino’s not done making use of the Web’s nooks and crannies quite yet.
Late last week, Gambino released his latest effort, the STN MTN / KAUAI mixtape. Shortly thereafter, a user on Reddit uncovered a hidden a capella track on Gambino’s official website, which made several references to the aforementioned “3005”. So, said user decided to sync the track up to STN MTN‘s closing track, “3005 (Beach Picnic Version)”, resulting in the little ditty aptly entitled, “Secret Track”. Gambino himself later confirmed the track’s legitimacy, linking to the same Reddit thread without offering further explanation. So, does that mean user peepsie112 gets some kind of engineering credit on the track?
The resulting track is something of a spiritual successor to the original “3005”, as it features the same chorus sped up significantly. From that base, Gambino builds a similarly kinetic number, romantically crooning about “the world I love is gone” (sounds like a break-up metaphor to me) over hazy piano, the rattle of several mis-matched drum beats, and some extra sturdy bass. If the first “3005” made you swoon, this one will help mellow your lovesick high just a wee bit.
