Though best known as the keyboardist of Jack White’s touring band and longtime member of The Mars Volta, Isaiah “Ikey” Owens collaborated with a countless number of musicians and bands over his career. So when Owens unexpectedly passed away from a heart attack while on tour with White in Mexico this week, tributes poured in, and a lot of them. During their show in Detroit on Thursday night, Pearl Jam honored Owens with a performance of “Light Years”.
Prior to the tribute, Eddie Vedder described Jack White White as “a friend of the whole group, a great player, a great writer and visionary.” He continued, “We send our heart out to [White] and his band … The only thing we can do is try to take energy here [at the concert] so we can remember [Owens] fondly.”
