With “Your Love Is Killing Me”, Sharon Van Etten tells a tale all too ordinary: a love affair that’s become so destructive and poisonous, we’d hurt ourselves just to feel something different. In filming the accompanying video, the question becomes how to capture such an abstract, yet decidedly familiar sensation. Director Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene) has taken a crack, and the resulting clip is utterly spellbinding.
The video stars Carla Juri (Wetlands) as a young woman who, after some confrontation, is forced from a bar and off toward some unseen destination. Anxious and clearly intoxicated, the woman makes her way through NYC, pure heartache and frustration dripping off her. Though the end goal becomes apparent, the company of her ex, the clip’s resulting twist literally left this writer slack-jawed. It may prove too shocking for some, but it definitely drives home the song’s message in a most succinct and compelling manner.
