Trail of Dead share new song “A Million Random Digits” — listen

on October 13, 2014, 12:00pm

Austin post-rockers …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead have shared the latest single from their upcoming ninth studio album, the aptly-titled IX. Following the anthemic ballad “The Ghost Within”, “A Million Random Digits” is on the more direct and forceful side of the band’s sonic spectrum. Here, Trail of Dead have taken a shambolic alt country jam and turned it up way past 11, until, the twangy guitars are about ready to shatter and the dense layers of drums and bass could practically smash a car window. It’s just as theatrical as its predecessor, but it eschews subtlety for the grace of haymaker to the solar plexus.

In a statement, frontman Conrad Keely explained the song’s origins and meanings:

The title was stolen from a book I found on one of those shelves in a guest house where backpackers are supposed to leave a book when they take one. Fortunately I’m not a backpacker so I’m not obligated to leave anything if I take one — which is also how I got a copy of Balthazar Gracian’s Art of Worldly Wisdom (in it Gracian recommends allowing yourself one vice, and mine is stealing useful things like books). The lyrics were inspired by the Viking series I’d recently watched on the History Channel — actually I watched a pirated copy (yet another vice) because we don’t get the History Channel out here. I felt a sense of connection to the idea of the Northmen being away from family while going a-raiding, similar to being away from family while working on a record — you end up killing about the same amount of people as well.

IX is due out November 11th via Superball Music. In support, the band will embark on a UK/European tour that same month. Consult their full schedule here.
