This year, Hyberdub marks its 10-year anniversary. In celebration, the British electronic label is releasing a series of compilations featuring new and unheard music from its various artists, including Darkstar, The Bug, Inga Copeland, Kode9, and Lee Gamble, among several others. The fourth and final installment, Hyperdub 10.4, arrives this week. Arguably its biggest treasure is a previously unreleased track from DJ/producer William Bevan, aka Burial.
A bootleg of “Lambeth” has been circulating online since 2008, but this marks the first time the studio recording has been released to the general public. Unlike Bevan’s more recent work, specifically last year’s Rival Dealer EP, “Lambeth” eschews his patchwork style for a more straightforward approach. Nuanced and decidedly understated, the track expertly pairs the echo of crisp drums and gentle synths. Too relaxing to be ominous, and too suggestive to be calming, it deftly maneuvers between emotional states until it settles in your brainstem.
