Lest we all forget, Mark Kozelek (aka Sun Kil Moon) does record music that doesn’t involve slamming the bejesus out of The War On Drugs. Next month, Kozelek will follow-up the excellent Benji LP with a new, nine-minute single called “The Possum”.
Featuring former Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, the song is equal parts ballad and literary narrative, an intense and winding journey through the various stories and reactions one could expect upon finding a dead possum in the road. A decidedly hokey gimmick for sure, but Kozelek’s subtle choices, from the range of emotions explored to the undulating piano line, make this a deeply gripping experience.
Here’s an idea, Mr. Kozelek: If you really want to call someone out for being creatively inferior, do it with songs like this and not ones involving bad oral sex jokes. Listen in below.
“The Possum” will be available December 1st via Kozelek’s own Caldo Verde imprint.
