The Decemberists have spent the last week or so teasing the release of their seventh studio album, What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World, first by busking new songs in front of a Brooklyn mural and then with a teaser trailer confirming the album’s January 20th, 2015 release. Today, the band has premiered a studio recording of the lead single, “Make You Better”. Take a listen below via the visualizer below.

Update: The band has also revealed the album’s tracklist and first batch of tour dates for 2015. A US leg will be announced shortly, according to a press release. Additionally, pre-orders are now available and include an instant download of Make You Better”.

A press release describes the album as their “most varied and dynamic work, both musically and emotionally.” One song, “12/17/12”, was written by Colin Meloy after President Obama addressed the nation following the Newtown school shooting and its lyrics inspired the album’s title. Meloy also cited Leonard Cohen’s 1977 collaboration with Phil Spector, Death of a Ladies’ Man, as a major influence on the album.

What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World serves as the follow-up to 2011’s The King Is Dead. For further previews, watch video of Meloy performing “Carolina Low” and “Lake Song”.
