Unreleased Captain Beefheart song “Little Scratch” surfaces — listen

on November 06, 2014, 11:30am

As previously reported, Rhino Records is releasing a box set containing Captain Beefheart’s early 1970s albums. Entitled Sun Zoom Spark: 1970 to 1972, the four-disc set collects remastered versions of Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970), The Spotlight Kid (1972), and Clear Spot (1972). A fourth disc features 14 never-before-released alternate versions, outtakes, and trial runs from the Clear Spot and The Spotlight Kid recording sessions.

Among those unreleased tracks is an early outtake of “Little Scratch”. Here, we get an inkling of just how important the remastering process can be, as this long-circulating bootleg is given new life thanks to a wee bit of studio magic. The psych-funk guitars wail a little harder, the blues elements and gritty rhythms shine that much brighter, and you can really hear and feel the hoarse intensity in Beefheart’s voice. Listen in below (via Rolling Stone).

Other rarities include a version of “I Can’t Do This Unless I Can Do This / Seam Crooked Sam” with sung lyrics instead of the spoken-word performance found on Bat Chain Puller; a rowdy take on Doc at the Radar Station’s “Dirty Blue Gene”; and a “nearly unrecognizable” instrumental rehearsal of Ice Cream For Crow’s “The Witch Doctor Life”.

The box set is due out November 11th and will be available as four-LP vinyl set or four-disc CD set. A digital version will also be released. Find the entire tracklist below.
