Unreleased Velvet Underground song “I Can’t Stand It” surfaces — listen

on November 06, 2014, 2:00pm

On November 24th, Polydor/UME will commemorate the 45th anniversary of The Velvet Underground’s self-titled third album with a deluxe reissue. The package includes stereo and mono versions of the album, live recordings from a November 1969 gig at San Francisco’s The Matrix, and, perhaps most exciting, a previously unreleased album dating back to 1969.

Aptly dubbed “The 1969 Sessions”, the 14-track collection chronicles the band’s October 1969 session at the Record Plant in New York City. The band hit the studio with the intention of recording an LP as a means of getting out of their contract with MGM. Several of these tracks would later make their way onto Lou Reed’s debut solo album, including “I Can’t Stand It”.

The difference between the 1969 full-band version of “I Can’t Stand It” and Reed’s solo rendition is rather striking: What would eventually become the driving, slightly funky garage rock jam that we know today actually started out as a more free-flowing, almost whimsical blues-rock ditty (think of some sloppy punk version of The Eagles).

A rough demo version of The Velvet Underground’s “I Can’t Stand It” was previously released on the 1985 outtakes compilation, VU. Streaming below you’ll find the newly remastered “2014 mix”.

Pre-orders for The Velvet Underground – 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition are ongoing. For more from the set, check out the remastered live recording of “I’m Waiting For The Man”, which appears on the Matrix disc.
