When he’s not working as a folklorist, documenting Indiana’s midwestern culture, Joseph O’Connell has been quietly making pastoral and minimal folk music as Elephant Micah. He’s been performing under the moniker for the past 14 years, releasing a handful of albums including 2012’s Louder Than Thou , usually through micro-labels and burned CDs. O’Connell’s latest album is entitled Where In Our Woods and will be released on January 20th through Western Vinyl, making it his first “official” wide release.
In anticipation, O’Connell has shared the meditative and expansive “Slow Time Vultures”. More sprawling than lead single “By The Canal”, the track was inspired by the arrival of migrating vultures to his parents’ southern Indiana farm as well as “Slow Time,” the colloquial expression for being an hour behind on the clocks in his pre-Daylight Savings time hometown.
