Stephen Colbert gets epic send-off from Michael Stipe, Jeff Tweedy, Randy Newman, and more — watch

on December 19, 2014, 12:45am

Last night marked the final episode of The Colbert Report and pretty much every celebrity ever came together to bid Stephen Colbert farewell with a singalong of Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again”.

R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe (who just yesterday was sold in a yard sale for 25 cents), Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Randy Newman, Willie Nelson, Peter Frampton, and Cyndi Lauper all took part in Colbert’s serenade. Other prominent figures included Jon Stewart, Bryan Cranston, President Bill Clinton, James Franco, Katie Couric, Jeff Daniels, Patrick Stewart, and Alek Trebek. Watch the replay below.

In the final episode, Colbert’s character achieved immortality after killing Grimmy (the Grim Reaper) and promised to return when America needs him most. He then rode off into the night with Santa Claus, Abraham Lincoln, and Alex Trebek, paving the way for the real Stephen Colbert to take over for David Letterman as host of CBS’ Late Show in September 2015.

Update: As several readers have pointed out, Neutral Milk Hotel’s song “Holland, 1945” played during the show’s credits.
