With its latest album, El Pintor, Interpol returned to its post-punk roots, emphasizing a kind of subdued, almost icy intensity over the grandiose swells that comprised much of its latter day catalog. It’s not only emotionally satisfying in a refreshing sort of way, but the kind of nuanced material that’s ripe for some interesting editing.
Factory Floor already had its way with “My Desire”, spinning it into some sinuous synth pop anthem. Now, DJ/producer Axel Willner, aka The Field, takes a crack at this writer’s favorite album cut, “Same Town, New Story”. Rather than reworking it entirely, Willner buries the song under a cascade of glitchy synths and undulating bass. Interpol’s evocative story about some sordid love affair isn’t lost, though; instead, Willner brilliantly plays up the inherently overwhelming weight that romances places on us fragile little humans.
