Empty Houses are a new garage pop outfit featuring Fireworks frontman David Mackinder. This time around, though, Mackinder joins the backing band as relative newcomer Ali Shea steps up to assume lead vocals. As evidenced by the group’s debut single, entitled “Far Away”, it proves to be a wise lineup swap indeed.
Taking on a Motown-inspired midtempo swing, the song not only boasts Shea’s excellent alto, but bubblegum hooks and well-crafted compositions. Though some parts of the track — namely the clanging drum sound — are rough around the edges, it only adds to Empty Houses’ inherent charm and general accessibility. Listen in below.
The track will appear on an upcoming self-released EP, due out later this year.
