Flying Lotus kicks off BBC Radio 1 residency with new music, Herbie Hancock interview — listen

on January 16, 2015, 9:45am

Flying Lotus is one of the resident artists who will curate BBC Radio 1’s playlist over the course of 2015 (James Blake held the same gig last year). Last night, he took to the airwaves for the first time with a mix that featured James Blake, Run the Jewels, Can, Pink Floyd, and Young Thug as well as some exclusive material.

The super producer debuted two unreleased cuts of his own, “Theme (Alternative Edit)” and “Post Requisite”, as well as a never-before-heard Thundercat song titled “You’re Dead”, and an alternate edit to Flylo’s Kendrick Lamar-featuring track “Never Catch Me”.

Perhaps the biggest surprise, however, was an interview with jazz great Herbie Hancock (who contributed to FlyLo’s latest album, You’re Dead!). The two discussed humans’ “infinite potential” for creativity and inspiration as well as Hancock’s personal evolution.

Listen to the entire two-hour episode at BBC’s website.
