Though he hails from a background of bluesy garage rock, Hanni El Khatib has shown an increased interest in hip-hop as of late. The title track to his upcoming third album Moonlight is described as equal parts “RZA and Iggy Pop,” and a subsequent remix featured Wu-Tang’s own GZA. Today, El Khatib teams with another talented MC in Freddie Gibbs for “Satin Black”.
El Khatib takes cues from Blakroc (which was helmed by his buddy and mentor Dan Auerbach), crafting a mighty beat that blurs the line between blown-out garage rock and bass-heavy trap music. Vocally, however, El Khatib takes a backseat, instead spotlighting Gibbs and his equally booming and boisterous rhymes. Listen in below.
“Satin Black” appears on Converse’s CONS EP Vol. 3, which lands later this spring. El Khatib’s Moonlight is due in stores on January 20th through Innovative Leisure.
