Melissa McCarthy in talks to star in new Ghostbusters film

on January 09, 2015, 3:31pm

Once it was revealed that the forthcoming Ghostbusters film would feature a female cast, Melissa McCarthy emerged as a fan favorite for one of the starring roles (Bill Murray, included). It seems the film’s producers are on board with the idea, as they’re currently in negotiations with the Mike and Molly star.

McCarthy previously worked with Ghostbusters director Paul Feig on Bridesmaids and is said to be interested in a leading role. However, negotiations are still in the early stages and there are several hurdles to overcome involving McCarthy’s schedule. (Ghostbusters is slated to begin filming in June, just months before McCarthy begins work on the film Michelle Darnell.)

As previously reported, Feig’s Ghostbusters will be more of a reboot than a sequel, with the characters experiencing ghosts for the first time. Feig explained, “There’s something fun about introducing our world, which has never seen ghosts to the phenomenon of ghosts. I love origin stories and to introduce new characters.”

Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, and Rebel Wilson are among other actresses currently being eyed for the film. While The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Jillian Bell (Workaholics) and Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live) are “due to meet with with Feig regarding the movie.”
