Modest Mouse has premiered a new song from Strangers to Ourselves, the band’s first album in eight years. Following the more funk-driven “Lampshades on Fire”, “Coyotes” is distinctly whimsical, a gentle and playful ballad marked by light guitar plucking and Isaac Brock’s subdued vocal performance. Under all that playfulness, however, exists some pointed commentary as Brock likens mankind’s lackadaisical views on the environment to “serial killing.”
Check out the song below via its adorable video, which sees a coyote riding a train through Portland. As Interstate-8 points out, the video’s concept is based on a real-life event and also served to inspire a Sleater-Kinney single.
Strangers to Ourselves is due out March 3rd via Epic. “Lampshades on Fire” and “Coyotes” will also be released as a standalone 7-inch on January 20th.
